Electronic Scooter Maintenance Guide

Maintenance Guide

Whether you already own an electronic scooter or are still planning to buy one, you need to know the proper maintenance of e-scooters. Doing necessary maintenance ensures that your electronic scooter will stay operating as the miles add up.

Doing regular maintenance for your electronic scooter ensures that you avoid problems in the future.

Why Is Electronic Scooter Maintenance Important?

Doing regular maintenance for your electronic scooter ensures that you avoid problems in the future. When you have a well-maintained e-scooter, you can rely on it whenever and wherever you need it.

Also, electronic scooters aren’t well-established yet, and getting one repaired is more complicated than getting a bicycle fixed.

Because of this, you need to understand how you can maintain your scooter and know what you need to do if some of the scooter parts need some repair.

What Electronic Scooter Parts Usually Need Repair and Maintenance?

Tyres and brakes are responsible for most scooter repairs and upkeep. If you ride your scooter for prolonged periods, you’ll almost certainly need to perform some maintenance. Most likely, you will have to replace a flat tyre or make a brake adjustment.

An electronic scooter’s most crucial safety component is its brakes. Because electronic scooters have different braking systems, it’s best to consult your manual for directions on keeping your braking system in good working order.

How to Maintain Tyres

Tyres degrade with time, and you can expect this as the miles rack up. To know precisely how to maintain scooter tyres, you must first be familiar with the types of scooter tyres.

There are two common electronic scooter tyres: pneumatic (air-filled) and solid (airless) tyres.

  • Solid tyres or airless tyres usually don’t need to be maintained because they don’t get flats. However, they are more challenging to replace than air-filled tyres.
  • For pneumatic tyres or air-filled tyres, the only maintenance required is monitoring the pressure and adding air. They also provide better cushioning and traction.

You will eventually need to replace both types of tyres after the tread wears out or if they get damaged.

Preventing Flat tyres

Since you will likely have to monitor the tyre pressure of air-filled tyres as maintenance, you must take preventive measures to avoid flat tyres. Here are steps you can take:

Ensure that you keep your tyres at the proper pressure. If your tyres are under-inflated, it is more likely to be punctured. To avoid this, constantly monitor your tyre pressure.

Use a tyre sealant (tyre slime). When the tyre is punctured, the sealant is forced through the small hole by escaping air. The sealant dries, closing the hole and preventing a flat on your electronic scooter.

Use tyre liners. Installing tyre liners requires removing the tyre and inner tube, so it’s better to do it after your first flat or if you need to replace the tyres.

Tip: Check the terms of your warranty if your electronic scooter’s tyres need to be replaced, as some distributors provide a part replacement.

How to Maintain Brakes

An electronic scooter’s most crucial safety component is its brakes. Because electronic scooters have different braking systems, it’s best to consult your manual for directions on keeping your braking system in good working order.

Common electronic scooter brake styles include disc brakes, drum brakes, foot brakes, regenerative brakes, and electronic brakes.

Usually, brakes will experience wear, and pads will wear out and need to be replaced over time. Here are the types of brakes and how you can replace them:

Disc brakes and foot brakes are easy to replace because their components are usually exposed.

Drum brakes are difficult to replace because they are placed inside the scooter wheel’s hub.

Regenerative or electronic brakes cannot be replaced because they are incorporated into the scooters’ electrical systems.

Tip: Your scooter brakes may be covered for repair or replacement if you have a warranty. Depending on the brand, warranty, and distributor, you may be asked to return the scooter to the distributor for repair, or you may be sent parts so you can replace it yourself.

How to Maintain Batteries

The only thing you have to know is not to misuse the battery for it to last the scooter’s life. To maximize electronic scooter battery life, you must:

Avoid storing your electronic scooter fully charged or with the charger plugged in for prolonged periods.

Avoid leaving your charger plugged in after charging. If you leave it plugged in after charging, the cathode will corrode, and it will reduce the battery’s capacity.

Avoid charging the scooter when it’s too cold (below 32 F°) or too hot (above 114 F°). Charging the electronic scooter at extremely low and high temperatures can shorten the battery’s life.

Tip: If you’re storing your batteries for prolonged periods, make sure to top them out now and then.
